6 Steps for Coping With Adversity
“All adversity is really an opportunity for our souls to grow” ~ John GrayWe are living in the age of adversity; life has its ups and downs and, try as you might, adversity is impossible to avoid. Problems are part of the universal life process. Even the happiest people in the world face adversity from time to time. Look at the Dalai Lama for example…he’s had to face great adversity in his life, being forced out of his homeland and into exile in India. Suffering spares no-one.
Great spiritual leaders however, know that there is an escape. Your true self doesn’t live in this world of suffering. The real provider of lasting well-being is your soul.
However, this is not to belittle the feelings of adversity which can be very real and sometimes devastating. These feelings have to be ‘worked through’ and will not usually disappear overnight.
I’m not a counsellor or psychologist but this is what we have found, by personal experience, works for us:
6 Steps you can take if you are encountering adversity:
- First of all, recognise adversity for what it is. We re-frame and reduce the intensity of it by making fire engine siren noises (neeh-naah!) when we recognise it entering our lives!
- Next, realise that adversity is temporary and seldom affects all parts of your life e.g you may lose your house and your job but your family still loves you; you still have your health etc.
- Practise gratitude; be grateful for what you have already.
- Understand that you have control over your response to adversity. As soon as pain appears, change your focus. There is a positive side to any event if you look for it.
- Reach a higher state of self-awareness by practising detachment. Learn to become a witness of your thoughts, feelings and reactions. This will enable you to see things more clearly by reducing the emotional involvement.
- Decide what action steps you can take today to help yourself; no matter how small.
Eventually you will reach a point where you genuinely feel that you have the power to cope.
Each one of us is different. How well do you cope with adversity? What are your strategies?

Beat the Holiday or Financial Blues
Is it all getting too much? Take a few deep breaths then read this post from Gretchen Rubin:
“Maybe you’re feeling down because of the financial crisis. Maybe you’re feeling overwhelmed by holiday tasks. Maybe you’re rushing around to try to get things done before you leave for vacation. Or maybe you’re just having a lousy day” …
Continue here Beat the Holiday or Financial Blues; Nine tips for making yourself happier in the next 30 minutes…
It worked for me!
Be Happy NOW
“Life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans”.
Wise words from John Lennon.
Life is happening now! The time to be happy is now. There is no other time; yesterday has gone and tomorrow isn’t here yet. We live in an eternal moment of NOW.
So many people continually postpone happiness. We tell ourselves that we’ll be happy when we get a promotion/get married/have a baby…whatever. We tell ourselves that one day we’ll get a new car or go on an overseas holiday; then we’ll be happy. It goes on.
Human life is full of challenges. It’s best to accept that and be happy anyway. Happiness attracts happiness, by the Law of Attraction!
Have a wonderful, happy day!
My 9 Internet Goals for 2009
Daniel Scocco from Daily Blog Tips has asked his readers to join a Group Writing Project and post their ‘Internet Goals’ for 2009.
I feel obliged to participate as ‘goals’ are one of the things I write about. Well, I’ve been meaning to write about them anyway. Another goal!
If you don’t have goals you’re like the proverbial ship without a rudder, on a storm tossed ocean with no compass or destination. No maps either.
Not having internet goals isn’t quite as bad as no life goals, but goals are still important if you don’t want to get distracted and waste your life on trivia. It’s very easy to get distracted on the internet!
I have nine internet goals for the New Year; (they are really blogging goals):
- To increase my readership (no limits to this)
- To increase my ‘Property Product’ sales
- To somehow upload my son’s “Thomas the Tank Engine” video clip to You Tube
- To find out what CSS are (what are they?)
- To stop the daily ‘blogger help’ emails in my Inbox. Unsubscribing doesn’t seem to work..
- To get more friends on SU
- To re-think my decision of joining My Blog Log
- To increase my authority on Technorati
- To figure out the meaning of life and Twitter (or TwiTip??)
The blogging world is indeed a strange place! I need YOU to help me achieve my goals.
Happy New Year!

Your Thoughts are Powerful

“You create your thoughts, your thoughts create your intentions, your intentions create your reality. Learn to act as if the life you visualize were already here.”~Dr. Wayne W. Dyer
“The only thing between you and your desire to be successful and wealthy is one single fact: you are not successful or wealthy because of how you think. This little known fact keeps many from reaching their goals of success and wealth… “

Who Controls Your Mind?
Article by Remez Sasson
Few people are aware of the thoughts that pass through their minds. Thinking is performed like a habit, in an automatic manner. If the thoughts are positive, then it is all right, but if they are negative, they may cause trouble.
The mind is like small child, who accepts and takes for granted whatever it sees or hears, without judgment and without considering the consequences. If you let your mind behave as it likes and give it complete freedom, you lose your freedom.
We are constantly flooded with thoughts, ideas and information coming through the five senses, other people, the newspapers and TV. These thoughts, ideas and information penetrate the mind whether we are aware of this process or not.
This outside flow influences our behavior and reactions. It influences the way we think, our preferences, likes and dislikes. This means that we let outside powers shape our lives. So where is freedom?
Most people think and believe that their thoughts originate from them, but have they ever stopped and considered whether their thoughts, desires, likes and dislikes are really theirs? Maybe they have come from the outside, and they have unconsciously accepted them as their own?
If there is no filter to process the thoughts that enter the mind, there is no freedom. Then all actions are like the actions of a puppet on a string, though no one will admit it.
You may object and say that the thoughts that pass through your mind are yours, but are they? Have you deliberately and attentively created every thought that entered your mind?
Why let outside influences control your mind and life? Why let other people’s thoughts control your life and mind? Do you want to make your mind free or do you prefer to enslave it to other people’s opinions and thoughts?
If you leave your mind open to every thought that passes by, you put our life in other people’s hands, and without realizing it, you accept their thoughts and act in accordance with them.
Each person is more susceptible to certain kind of thoughts than others. Certain thoughts and ideas we ignore, and others spur us to immediate action. Thoughts concerning subjects we love have more power on us than other thoughts, but even thoughts and ideas that we don’t care about, if we are frequently exposed to them, eventually sink into the subconscious mind and influence us.
Everyone has desires, ambitions and dreams that he or she may foster from childhood. They may be the thoughts of parents, teachers and friends, and which have lodged into our minds, and are carried around throughout our lives. Are they necessary? Do we need all this excessive baggage?
In order to reduce the power of outside influences and thoughts on your life, you need to be aware of the thoughts and desires that enter your mind, and ask yourself whether you really like them, and are willing to accept them into your life. Analyze your motives and actions, and you will be surprised to find out that many of them were triggered by outside influences.
You do not have to accept each and every thought, idea or information. Think and find out whether you entertain certain thoughts because you decided to do so, or because they just popped into your head due to outside influences.
Learn not to accept every thought that you encounter. Find first whether it is for your own good to follow it. It may not be so easy at the start, because the mind will revolt against this control. If you want to be the master of your mind and life, you should not let other people’s thoughts, desires and motives rule your life, unless you consciously choose so.

How To Be Truly Happy
Use the unlimited power of your mind…
“Once you realize that your mind is constantly creating every experience in your life, you will usually have feelings of complete empowerment and overwhelming fear. Why? Because taking complete responsibility for one’s life has that affect on people. On one hand, you now understand that you can recreate your life anyway you choose to.
Riches? Power? Success? Abundance? Love? You can have it all…”

9 Initial Steps to Financial Freedom
Would you like to be financially free? You know all the theory but, how exactly do you get started?
Everyone is different; we all have different backgrounds, interests and realities. We are in different financial positions and have different life goals, so it is difficult to give ‘step by step’ instructions on exactly what to do as far as getting financially free goes.
However, there are some basics, which are common sense and apply in general. Perhaps the world would not be in such a mess at the moment if people had paid more attention to the most important one, being Live Within Your Means. Don’t waste money on ‘doodads’; once you have built your asset column you can buy your toys.
So, to become financially free, your passive income (i.e money you don’t have to work for) must exceed your expenses. Your incomings have to exceed your outgoings. A good example of this is ‘positive cash flow property‘, where the rental covers all the bills and you get some cash too!
And, as always, you must take action! Just do it. Do anything.. write down your goals, read some books; The “Rich Dad Poor Dad” series is a good place to begin. (Robert Kiyosaki will tell you how to get started in the property game, if you’re interested). Borrow the books from the library if you have to. Download a podcast and listen to a motivational speaker. Just get moving! The younger you start the better.
The following 9 steps are a good start:
1. Live within your means
2. Don’t rack up bad debt (always pay in cash)
3. Pay your credit cards off every month
4. Pay off your mortgage as soon as you can
5. Don’t spend a lot of money on depreciating assets (liabilities) e.g cars, massive TVs
6. Work for yourself (JOB = Just Over Broke)
7. Save as much as you can
8. Buy income producing assets if you can (e.g positive cash flow rental property)
9. Have a positive mental attitude; visualise having already achieved your goals
Remember you are aiming for a better future; a comfortable retirement. Think of it as delayed gratification.
We drove around in dented old ‘japanese import’ cars for years, while our friends drove late model cars and bought boats. We lived in the same house for sixteen years (mortgage-free) while our collegues borrowed and upgraded to more expensive homes. Our peers went on extended holidays to Europe, while we back-packed around Asia.
Keep your mind on the ultimate goal of financial freedom. It’ll be worth it.
“There’s nothing I have to Have

“We do not attract what we want, but attract what we are.”
